Colombia - Huila Santa Maria
Huila is one of Colombia’s southernmost coffee-producing departments and is home to its third-highest peak, the Nevado del Huila volcano. According to the FNC, the department accounts for around 18% of Colombia’s total coffee production and received an official Denomination of Origin status in 2013. This particular lot comes from Santa Maria, a town located in the northern part of Huila, not far from the departmental capital of Neiva. The coffees from this region tend to have bright, sweet flavors such as tangerine or red apple.
This lot is a blend of Caturra and Castillo varieties. These are two of the most common coffee trees in Colombia. Both come from the Bourbon family, Caturra is known for its smaller leaves and higher berry count. This variety typically has a sweet and complex profile with subtle fruit notes. The Castillo variety is a further mutation on the Caturra plant. It is a dwarf plant, making it easier to plant closer together making the harvest higher. These plants are known for larger fruit and being more resistant to coffee leaf rust. This disease has been a large issue in Colombia in the last 15 years, wiping out farmers Bourbon trees.
